Brisbane and Australia Zoo

Brisbane is the larges City of Queensland. As it features an international airport and friends of us live here, we made Brisbane the base camp of our holiday in Australia.
Spring and autumn are good times to visit Brisbane, it's not to hot in the daytime and cools down below 20
oC during the night. From the lookout at Mt. Coot-tha you have a view over the whole city to the Pacific ocean.

We visited Christine and Andrew who live in Brisbane and just bought a very nice house. It is close enough to the centre and still right in the bush...

...and, last but not least, has a spa bath! In this part of Australia it's nearly always warm enough to take an open air bath.

Brisbane itself isn't too bad for a big city. Right through the centre meanders a river, the "Brisbane River" of course.

To get from one part of the centre to the next one can cross the river taking the bridges or one can take the "bus" which run to schedule on the river.

At South Bank the site of the World Expo 1988 has been transformed into a park with lots of cafes, art work and a wide variety of plants.

The small artificial lagoon has been converted into a public pool complete with a real sandy beach and Baywatch-tower
- and all that is for free!

And when the daylight starts to fade you just take you kite and enjoy the last rays of the sun surfing or find yourself a nice spot for the BBQ on the beach.

The Australia Zoo lies about 75km north of Brisbane. It was founded by the crocodile hunter Steve Irvin and you can find pictures of him and his family everywhere.

In the Australia Zoo there are only native animals. One of the attractions of the zoo are the Koalas, of course. They do actually sleep all day but they are really cute - and their fur is ever so soft.

The kanguroo takes a break sometimes, too.

Of course they have some of the typical australian long-legged bird like Emu and Jabiru in this zoo.

There are two kinds of crocodiles in Australia. The freshwater crocodiles (Freshies) are rather harmless. They are scared of humans and hide, as long as you don't try to get to their nest. It is easy to recognize the freshies because of their long pointed nose.

The other kind of crocodiles are the saltwater crocodiles or "salties". They eat almost anything and everything, so the daily feeding show during which Steve Irvine gets pretty close to them is quite spectacular.

And which animals should not be missing in an australian zoo? Snakes, of course, the more venomous the better.
